When will Insurance companies cover the cost of this surgery?
As predicate, Insurance companies are not physicians; so that approval for surgery by an insurance company does not mean that you are approved for surgery. Only Dr. Thomas can make that decision, and does so after he has examined you, and received all of the background and testing information.
Insurance companies generally establish internal guidelines for determining coverage. Some may include the NIH recommendations regarding body mass index and co-morbidities, as well as other factors, which, in insurance jargon, indicate to the company the surgical procedure is "medically necessary". Coverage may also depend on the agreement between your employer or other "group" and the insurance company.
